Draft Discussion Continues In Congress While Competition Still Exists For Many Military Jobs

Bonita, CA (PRWEB) November 28, 2006 -- As Congress debates the need for a draft, the U.S. military continues to meet recruiting goals, exceed re-enlistment quotas, and turn away qualified candidates. At a time when common opinion predicted retention problems, manpower remains strong for the armed services. And despite Capital Hill draft deliberations stemming from comments made this week by Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY), one U.S. Marine observes first hand that long lines are forming at recruiting offices and has written a book to teach young military pilot candidates how to succeed in the face of stiff competition.

"I've never seen the supply so far exceed the demand," says Marine Corps fighter pilot Ed Rush, "I get hundreds of e-mails from people all over the country who want to know more about how they can get into the U.S. Military. It seems that the more supposedly 'distasteful' this war has become, the more people want in. This trend is heightened in specialty fields like my own. If we were having a problem with recruiting or re-enlistment, then we might need a draft. Since the lines at recruiting offices are still quite long, the draft discussion seems to be more political maneuvering than anything else."

A recently released report from the Center for Naval Analysis indicated that deployment rates and deployment tempo have had little to no effect on career retention. Many of the services have gone so far as to curb overall numbers in the wake of high re-enlistment rates. The Navy has recently offered a voluntary early separation program to manage already high troop levels. The Marine Corps has met retention goals in 2004 and 2005, and is on track for 2006. The Air Force just completed a downsizing of its officer corps.

Due to growing interest, fighter pilot Ed Rush recently designed a system to teach young Americans how to join the military. Rush's system focuses on what he knows best, becoming a fighter pilot, and includes his own book, "Future Ace: The Definitive Guide to Becoming A Fighter Pilot".

Rush attributes increased demand for his system to a very motivated and informed generation of young and patriotic Americans. He says, "The folks joining the service now are more educated than ever. Becoming a military pilot used to be a dream. Now, young men and women everywhere are raising their hand and saying, 'Hey, that's me!'"

Those who battle through the intense competition find a world of opportunity waiting on the other side. With some hard work and dedication, many candidates end up flying F-16s or F-18s. For others, one false move can mean rejection.

"I recently worked with a young man from Arizona who was competing for a slot as an Air Force pilot. He was selected; however over 75% of the applicants from the state did not make it. These other qualified individuals were turned away simply due to capacity. The numbers highlight the need to be as proactive as possible if you want to be in the military."

Rush just doesn't buy the fact that the country needs a draft. "The lines at recruiting stations continue to get longer and the applicants who are accepted are smarter, stronger, and more disciplined than ever. In my opinion, that is a very positive trend."
