Local Wireless Company to Bring Jobs to St. Pete
St. Petersburg, FL (PRWEB) November 14, 2006 -- The city of St. Petersburg is expected to select a wireless Internet provider to go before the city council by the end of the year. The committee charged with selecting qualified companies to go before the city council named a local company, Citi WiFi Networks as a finalist to build out the network at no cost to the city.
Citi WiFi Networks is headquartered in downtown St. Pete. As a result, the company made an undeniably fantastic proposal for the Sunshine city: a free private network for all city employees and reduced cost Internet service in low-income neighborhoods. Plus, anyone in St. Pete will be able to access the city’s website and the Pinellas county school websites for free.
“We’re excited to have the opportunity to expand the network here in our own backyard,” says St. Petersburg native Frank McCarthy, Citi WiFi’s Chief Executive Officer.
Last year, Citi WiFi Networks created a wireless broadband network for the Vinoy Place & Beacon on Third Condominiums. Since then, Citi WiFi won two municipal contracts in Tampa Bay, including Dunedin and Treasure Island. Citi WiFi was also selected by the City of West Palm Beach to build a similar network there.
The company has several local initiatives well underway. They are working to install a solar-powered Disaster Recovery Emergency Communications Platform around Pinellas County. In the event of a catastrophic event when there is no power and all the lines are cut, there will be a working communications platform, something that was unavailable for weeks following Hurricane Wilma last year in South Florida.
“I would be thrilled if the city of St. Pete decided to use the same provider as us,” says St. Petersburg resident Mark Santos who is also the Information Technology Director for the city of Treasure Island, where Citi WiFi recently signed a contract to build a similar network. “The idea that I could surf the web seamlessly when in the office, at home or on the road around Pinellas County is a wonderful concept.”
Citi WiFi Networks seems to have a slight advantage over other competitors hoping to win a contract with the city of St. Petersburg. The company offered more bandwidth, which results in a faster Internet connection. The company also offered free access for City employees and reduced cost service in qualified low-income areas.
“Because we are headquartered in St. Pete, the local economy will get a significant boost as this office will support a majority of the jobs for the company’s many other projects around Florida,” says Chief Operating Officer Mike Sheaffer, who adds that virtually every dollar Citi WiFi spends is spent here in St. Petersburg. “This includes everything from Legal, Accounting, insurance, & marketing to installers, electrical contractors, and network equipment distributors like Tech Data, all of which are St. Petersburg based companies.”
Citi WiFi is looking to fill 5 positions immediately and expect to add another 100+ jobs within the months to come.
