The Ideal Nursing Candidate – Is It You? Recruiters and hiring managers are constantly looking for ideal candidates to fill their open nursing positions. They want candidates with qualifications, usually with relevant experience, and longevity- there’s no point in hiring someone that will leave the company 6 months later, necessitating starting the process all over again. Your Resume

Your resume speaks volumes about you as a candidate for a position. Seemingly small errors can cause a recruiter to shrug you off as “not a fit” instead of continuing to read through your resume and considering you as a serious candidate. Here are a few things to note when revising your resume (which you should do every six months, so that it stays up-to-date):

Avoid typos – Your resume is your first impression, and you want employers to know that you are intelligent and capable of exceeding the expectations of a position.

Use Proper Grammar – If you no longer work at a company, everything should be in the past tense. Be careful about subject-verb agreement, tense, and all the other grammatical niceties. It’s always a good idea to spell check and grammar check your resume, but don’t rely on the computer. Have someone else review your resume as well- an extra pair of eyes is always helpful for pointing out if something doesn’t sound like what you were trying to say, for example.

Job Duties – This is your opportunity to explain the scope of your position and what you did with it. You should briefly note how you excelled and what you actually accomplished in the role. Try to clearly express your capabilities and current job responsibilities.

To Write a Cover Letter or Not to Write a Cover Letter

The answer from Human Resource professionals is a resounding "yes!" Cover letters are your chance to stand out among the crowd of applicants and prove what kind of an asset you’d be to the company. In addition, cover letters are a great “in” if you are sending an unsolicited resume (i.e. you are not responding to a job posting). As you may know, many companies only publish a portion of their open positions. Many proactive job seekers submit a resume for positions that aren’t advertised to the public. In that case, a resume without a cover letter is practically useless. You wouldn’t walk into an interview without introducing yourself, and you shouldn’t ask to be considered for a job without doing the same. You should write a custom cover letter for each job you apply for, a letter that identifies your relevant experience and strengths for that specific position.

Study, Study, Study

You can make an even better impression in an interview if you know some background about the company you are trying to land a job with. Read the job description and experience required sections of the job posting thoroughly, and think of some talking points to show the interviewer. This will demonstrate that you know what the job entails and you can give them specific examples of how you qualify. It’s also a great idea to do your research on the organization – what they stand for, what the company culture is like, etc. The more you know about a company, the easier it will be to define whether it is an ideal match for you and you’ll be better suited to pitch yourself as the ideal candidate. Studying the company you are applying for a position with may also help you decide if you really are a good fit for the job and the company- no need to spend time applying for a position and going through the interview process only to find out after you’re hired that there is some major reason you’d have not to want to work there.

There is one common theme in all aspects of a job search: you! It’s all about you – what unique qualities, experiences and drive you bring to the table. Market yourself! If you’ve got a boring, run-of-the-mill resume, with no cover letter, potential employers will also see you as boring and run-of-the- mill. Your resume is your calling card; it advertises you as a potential employee- use it to show the strengths you want employers to know about.
