Finding Employment For Medical Coders
The opportunities for medical coding jobs are extremely varied. Nevertheless the majority of them lead back to one place - a medical coding job with a medical clinic or hospital.
Fortunately, unless you live in the middle of nowhere, opportunities for medical coding jobs should be plentiful. For many years the demand for medical coders has greatly outweighed the supply. This is excellent news for a new medical coder hunting for a job.
So how do you actually find medical coding employment?
Of course, employment opportunities can be found in the classified ads. Although, you are at the mercy of the timing of postings. It's not the favorite method. You should be aware that there are many medical coding publications where medical coding jobs are routinely posted. Advance Magazine, an AHIMA (American Health Information management Association) publication, is an exceptional source. What's more, in this day and age, there are multitudes of medical coding job boards dedicated to opportunities in the medical coding field.
If you aren't reserved, one of the greatest ways to discover medical coding job opportunities is by calling or visiting the medical records department of hospitals or clinics in your area. Request a meeting with the medical records director or supervisor and briefly introduce yourself. Locating the best medical coding job involves some proactivity on your part. Medical coding employment can be found in many organizations, such as:
- Large hospitals
- Private hospitals small and large
- National medical billing & coding service providers
- Clinics
- Nursing homes & rehabilitation centers
- Home healthcare agencies
- Insurance companies
Hospitals are inclined to be extra strict and bureaucratic in their approach to medical coding employment than medical clinics or physician groups. However, their pay rates are generally better.
Hospitals have a tendency to demand an advanced level of inpatient medical coding skill and certification. Then again, large hospitals typically offer medical transcription benefits which far outweigh benefits provided by nearly all smaller organizations. A few of these benefits may possibly include overtime earnings, flex-time, sick leave, paid vacation, and conceivably the most importantly - generous health care benefits. Also, if you are interested in pursuing a permanent career as a Medical Records Director or Hospital Administrator, a large hospital system will usually provide additional opportunities for upward mobility.
The great thing about physician offices and medical clinics is that they are inclined to be open during relatively normal business times. This allows for conventional and relatively stable work hours for medical coders. Though, if flexibility is an essential benefit that you must have, you should probably look for a medical coding job in a hospital. Almost all hospitals are open 24 hours a day 7 days per week and typically offer substantial flexibility to medical coders.
